5 Tips for Travelling with Pets

Travelling with pets can be challenging, that's why we've written 5 tips to help make your trip go as smoothly as possible.

1. Ginger Biscuits

If your dog isn't quite used to long car rides they can start to feel sick. One of the best ways to combat this is to give them a ginger biscuit, or half if they are a small breed. Pure ginger (in small doses) is also safe for your dog to eat. You can also get ginger capsules but the biscuit might be easiest to get them to eat.

2. Music

The music you play in your car has a bigger effect on your pets than you might think. Heavy metal probably isn't a good idea if you want them to not be anxious, something calm and soothing is a better choice. Classical music is also a good choice, or choosing singers with higher pitched voices.

3. Safety First

Never take a cat in your car without a pet carrier (they are known for trying to hide under the pedals) and it's actually against the law to not use a car harness for your dog, when it's travelling on a seat. You can also get travel crates and some cars have a suitable boot space.

4. Water

Remember to bring a water bottle and a bowl in the car with you and take regular breaks to allow your pet to have a drink and get a toilet break. Service stations often have some outdoor seating, these are fantastic for letting your pet get some fresh air. It goes without saying, but never leave your dog in the car on their own, even if it's a cool day.

5. Paperwork

It's a good idea to bring paperwork that proves that your pet's vaccinations are up to date, you never know when you might need to visit a vet. You should also make sure their collar has a tag with your contact details on.
